The Pomonal community is set to benefit from a recent grant obtained by Ararat Rural City Council to address traffic safety concerns in the township.

Council was successful in securing $50,000 via the VicRoads Towards Safer Speeds Challenge Grant Program to start the Pomonal Speed Smart Initiative.

Ararat Rural City Council Mayor, Cr Gwenda Allgood said the project would look to address issue of motorists travelling at excessive speeds through Pomonal.

“Council is pleased to partner with VicRoads and work with the community to address this important issue in one of our rural towns,” she said.

“Recently there have been signage erected in Pomonal, but it has had little effect in slowing traffic down. This project will investigate other innovative ways to reduce speed.

“Pomonal is such a vibrant, thriving community and there is a lot happening around the town, so we really want to make sure everyone is safe, particularly as this road is one of the main entrance points to the Grampians.”

A project control group has been established to lead the Pomonal Speed Smart Initiative, with the group having its first meeting earlier this month.
