Community members from Ararat and surrounding districts are invited to join the celebrations this Thursday, January 26 for Australia Day.

Official proceedings will begin at 12 noon with a free Lions Club of Ararat BBQ lunch at Alexandra Oval Community Centre, followed by formalities commencing at 1pm with Australia Day Ambassador Dr Bronwyn King, Citizenship Ceremony and the Ararat City Band.

Each year Ararat Rural City Council presents awards to local citizens and community groups that have made outstanding contributions to the community, and Ararat Rural City Council Mayor, Cr Paul Hooper said this year there is a slight modification to that format.

“This year these awards have been selected and provided by Ararat Rural City Council on behalf of the National Australia Day Council,” Cr Hooper said.

“Instead of a Citizen of the Year, in 2017 we will award an Ararat Ambassador who has demonstrated commitment to the betterment of the Ararat Rural City community, as well as undertaken activities, which have short and long term benefits for others.

“The other three major categories that will be acknowledged are the Multicultural Harmony Award, Community Spirit Award and Inspired Healthy Living Award.”

Cr Hooper said the weather forecast looks ideal for the planned family pool parties at the Willaura, Lake Bolac and Ararat Outdoor Pools, with activities and games to commence from 2pm.

“After a swim, families are encouraged to grab a picnic blanket and head along to Alexandra Gardens from 8.30pm for the Outdoor Cinema screening of Oddball with free popcorn and movie snacks,” Cr Hooper said.

“There's something for the whole family to enjoy this Australia Day!”
