Cr Paul Hooper (Mayor)

Tell us about your background? (Family, career, professional experiences)

Born and raised in Ararat, I have a close relationship with its residents and intimate knowledge of the business, natural and built environment. Being a third generation grocer, and a small business entrepreneur I have the business and financial acumen that is need as a Councillor. I have many years of experience at both committee and board positions in the independent supermarket sector and I also have previous experience as both a Councillor and Mayor.

What are your most enjoyable hobbies/interests?

I inherited a passion and life-long interest in wine and food from my father, and I very much enjoy travel and a game of golf.

What do you see as the biggest strengths within the municipality of the Ararat Rural City and what is your vision for the next four years?

We have in the rural city a diversity of employers both private and public, large and small that allows us to ride out economic cycles better than most. We have fantastic farmers and a diverse agriculture industry within the rural city, and of course we are in a world renowned wine and tourism region. In addition we have brilliant health, education and recreation facilitates, arguably the best in the state for our size. Also we are connected like no other municipality with a north/south highway and soon to be constructed rail with access to the three major ports in Victoria. A duplicated highway all the way to Melbourne and we are also the regional hub for passenger rail services to Melbourne. But the main strength to me is that we have a community that is accepting of others, a community that respects our differences and a community that is tolerant and caring.

My vision for the next four years is to continue to work on our strengths, to attract more investment and employment opportunities particularly for our youth and to work towards a more sustainable future for the rural city.
