Australia Day celebrations a hit
The Ararat community turned out in force to celebrate Australia Day 2017.
Ararat Rural City Council Mayor, Cr Paul Hooper has thanked the community for showing its support of Ararat’s revamped Australia Day Awards.
For the first time the Awards and Citizenship Ceremony was conducted at the Alexandra Oval Community Centre with about 250 people turning up to support the festivities.
“The day started with a fantastic ‘Aussie BBQ’ provided by the Ararat Lions Club, who always do a great job,” Cr Hooper said.
“There was great feedback too for the Ararat City Band, who entertained the crowd with a mix of modern and classic songs.
“This year Ararat Rural City Council presented four new awards to those who have made outstanding contributions to our community and all recipients were very well received, led by our Ararat Ambassador, Dianne Radford.”
Cr Hooper said the keynote speech by 2017 Australia Day Ambassador, Dr Bronwyn King was the highlight of the ceremony.
“Dr King has already achieved so much in her young life and she proved to be a very entertaining and insightful speaker,” he said.
“She mingled with the crowd after the proceedings and everyone was very interested and keen to meet her.”
The Australia Day party then moved to Alexandra Gardens where children enjoyed a pool party at the Ararat Outdoor Olympic Swimming Pool and parents a coffee at Gardens Lake Café.
“The night finished with an outdoor cinema in the gardens, which about 100 people attended,” Cr Hooper said.
“On behalf of all Councillors I’d like to congratulate everyone who worked hard to make the day possible.”
